The Rathbone Greenbank service for charities aims to maximise the financial return from investments and ensure fiduciary responsibilities are met while ensuring that these investments are compatible with each charity’s mission. In particular, we help charities use ethical investment in a positive and constructive way, to reduce risks and if possible to further their mission.

Recent regulations require charities to disclose their investment policy on the integration of social, environmental and ethical issues, and donors are increasingly considering how charities invest their funds.

Our tailored approach to ethical investment together with our in-house research team means that we can address each charity’s particular aims and objectives. We have considerable expertise in understanding ethical investment for charities, including foundations, operating charities and religious orders. We are involved in the advisory group of the EIRIS/UKSIF charity project, and have presented extensively on ethical investment for charities.

We can also help charities actively identify investments which further their objectives – we are one of the largest supporters of mission related investments on behalf of clients – and particularly focus on those which offer returns close to the market rates.  For example, we have backed projects in clean energy, social property, fair trade and microfinance.
